About Me

My name is Daniel Philpott and I make my living in the software business. I am from Houston, Texas and I live currently in Los Angeles, California.

I have been very fortunate in my career to have had many extraordinary opportunities...

My Background

I started in the computer field in 1985 with my trusty used Apple II C and used color dot matrix printer. Booting from the floppy disk, it was a true wonder.

I spent several years working with MIDI, as I was a musician, in addition to learning and writing little programs in BASIC.

My career began in earnest in 1993 when I began working for a company building large scale systems for the Department of Defense in Washington, DC. Our core mainframe system had gotten seriously out of sync with the reality of the actual parts inventory and system configurations. I was given a Windows computer and a copy of FoxPro. I quickly wrote my own order tracking system. This ended up getting me the title of Analyst and I was sent to the central building to work on the main Oracle database.

Oracle was quite primitive compared to now, but it was a fantastic experience learning data modeling, SQL, and concepts of referential integrity enforcement, etc… (Geek note: The referential integrity of the data was enforced by the code, not the database software, this was how the system had gotten so far out of whack.)

I saw the Internet for the first time in 1994. This was truly life changing. I KNEW this was the next big thing. At LEAST as big as the telephone. So, by 1995, I was determined to get into this field, using my prior knowledge of relational databases, mainframe, client server, etc

I moved to Los Angeles. After spending some time running a very large EDI program, I decided to go for the Internet full time. I was hired at Citibank and wrote the prototype of their Internet banking system in my first couple of months there. Several other extraordinary opportunities have followed... I have working as a development manager, software architect, and technologist ever since. I have worked in Mainframes, Client Server, J2EE, .NET, Intelligent Robotics, rules engines, and just about every technology around today.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what happened to my trusty Apple II C. If you know where it is, please drop an email to me. Thanks!

I have penned a couple of articles here. You may view them if you wish.
