What Is A Technologist?

Since I have “technologist” as one of my descriptions, I thought I’d write a short description of this type of work. First, a good technologist is usually a technology generalist with a broad background. Below I describe some of the tasks a technologist would typically perform.

Software Due Diligence

The importance and complexity of software being what it is, there are many “trip-wires” surrounding any software decision. A mistake in choosing any combination of hardware, operating system, database software, application server software, and programming language can bring disastrous results. Frequently, the only way to avoid this situation is to have experienced help available.

Packaged Software Decisions

A strong technologist can also help with due diligence on packaged software solutions. Companies in this game are frequently selling packages based on older technology. These packages often have severe built-in limitations. Old data structures, batch processes, integration roadblocks and the like are VERY common.

These limitations will never be apparent in the software demonstrations. It takes quite a bit of knowledge to sift through the clever marketing of such products. So hire a “guru” and save a big pile of money. You’ll be glad you did.
